An object that has an obvious purpose but said purpose is mysterious. Common usage, "I found this fertin in the junk drawer, and I know it goes to something, so I better hang onto it 'cause the minute I throw it out, I'll need it." Alternatively, an object that appears to be an intrinsic part of another object, the overall purpose of which is unknown.
Alternative spelling: furtin.
Then again, it could just be a southernism; I first heard it during college in NC a few millenia ago, when wheels were new.
