112123 - |
(n.) A sign of recognition or motto (and a bit of a credo, I suppose) among semioticians. (From semiotics luminary Charles Sanders Santiago Peirce's system of relationships among the elements of signs (words, pictures, maps, syllogisms, etc.) and their meanings, which he dubbed 'firstness,' 'secondness,' and 'thirdness' (to avoid any other terms' semantic baggage): hence, "123." Firstness can only give rise to firstness (1); secondness to both firstness (1) and secondness (2); and thirdness to all three: firstness, secondness, and thirdness (123). Hence "1,12,123.")
