An unrelated person of either sex who cohabits with another. To give appropriate credit, this term was suggested by a gentleman on an NPR program about the inclusion of new words in the OED. It has the benefits of being derived from well-known Latin roots and being neither masculine nor feminine. Similar to paramour, but -- despite its similarity to bonvivant -- implies a more serious and perhaps long-term relationship. The legal system has been looking for such a term to describe what, with less gentility, is called a shackmate.
