A locating term used to describe Maine as in "downeaster" a noun-adjective used to describe persons from Maine. It derives from ME's geographical location as compared to Northern Canada and the Hudson Bay and Arctic Circle areas. Trappers, traders, and Indians who first inhabited these areas were so far north and west of the newly formed colony and state that they thought of it as downeast, and the handle stuck.
Примеры использования:
George Di Maggio flew in a low-flying six-seater puddle jumper from Fort McMurry to Toronto with one stop in Winnipeg. The next leg took him further downeast to Portland, ME.
