ferris wheel - |
(n., also the "ferris wheel gambit") 1. a rhetorical device by which a speaker turns a single group into a set of (inimical) factions by declaring common ground or sympathy with one of the factions. (The term actually derives from the Greek New Testament, in which Paul, facing the Sanhedrin, and noting that some were Sadducees (Zadokim) and some were Pharisees (Pawrashim), called out, "I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee!" effectively dividing the counsel into two sects at each other's throats (with the Pharisees supporting Paul) instead of the united Sanhedrin they had been thitherto. In the Greek, Paul's words are "¦µ¦Б¦С¦Й¦Т¦Б¦Й¦Пς ¦Е¦Й¦М¦Й ¦Ф¦Й¦Пς ¦µ¦Б¦С¦Й¦Т¦Б¦Й¦П¦Ф" (farisaios eimi uios farisaiou). Anyway, certain listeners of the younger sort heard the Greek as "Ferris Wheel." Hence this entry.)

An estadounidense, for example, facing a hostile Mexican legislative body, might openly subscribe, in their presentation, to the positions of the PAN (National Action Party), turning the PAN members against those council members belonging to the PRI (the Institutional Revolution Party), thus garnering support in the one camp at the expense of the other. |
