excuse used to justify clinging to outworn relationships on the basis of the time you've known someone, whether that time has actually been mostly spent in the company of that person or not, and whether the time spent was good or not. For example, going back to an ex that cheated on you and lied to you over and over again is justified by the fact that you have so much "history" with them when clearly even friendship with such a person is extremely inadvisable.
