(From the structure of old Nintendo video games, wherein each level ended with what Sir Alfred Hitchcock called a "Master Antagonist" who must be defeated to progress in the game. Often (far too often) the games were not built to 'save' until this master antagonist was soundly trounced, so my kids would often complain that they couldn't do whatever they were supposed to do until after they had "killed the main guy.")
