This is a word I invented several years ago on the bulletin board of author Elizabeth Lowell. Since then it has become popular there and even appeared on the New York Times bestseller list in the dedication of one of her novels.
The original meaning was the happy sound of a pet mole curled up in Ms. Lowell's lap; later it was extended to mean laughter at a joke ("I murfled out loud"), and then to mean the joke itself, as in "Monday morning murfle."
