Parenthetic (and pathetic) excuse found in dictionaries of slang. With such a disclaimer at hand, you have a built-in excuse for your meanness. Sometimes said along these lines: "Not necessarily meant pejoratively, but nearly always perceived that way." That could just as apty be written this way: "Nearly always meant pejoratively, but not necessarily perceived that way. "Heads up: Depending on the goodwill of the targets of your insults may not be the brightest course to take.
Attempting to draw favorable attention to yourself by saying mean things about someone else is taking the low road. Trying to make yourself look good by making others look bad may be de rigueur in certain political circles, but it's not to be done in polite society -- or around me.
When you say "I was just kidding" or "I was just givin' ya' the piss," you acknowledge that what you said was intended to belittle, demean, embarrass, poke fun at, put down, or otherwise diminish someone else. You know you're being insulting and mean.
If you're going to say insulting things about or to others, at least have the balls to own up to acting like a jerk. If you have a real talent for it, you can become an insult comedian and get paid for being an asshole.

You could also tag that with "(affectionately)," but it won't make it any more acceptable to me. It may not be necessary for me to take your use of the term as derogatory, but I see the fact that you and I both know what's in septic tanks as sufficient for me to take offense.
You say it's just innocent rhyming slang? Well, pal, Sherman Tank rhymes just as well. Given the number of Yanks who died in World War I and World War II, the least you Aussies, Brits, and Kiwis could do is refer to US without using derogatory terms.
Hmmm, let's see, what rhymes with Brits?
I'd prefer to be called a sherman rather than a seppo, thank you very much.
