Every day, when I come home from work I sit on my couch, take off my socks and throw them on the floor of my apartment in roughly the same place. The pile that accumulates is the room's Sock Event Horizon. Sort of, but not really, taken from the Shoe Event Horizon described by visionary writer Douglas Adams. In reality, an event horizon is a point in a black hole at which it is no longer possible for anything to escape, essentially the point of no return. Once I throw one sock, all of them are bound to end up in the pile. Flimsy, I know, but it still gets a laugh.

See that pile on the floor there? That's my sock event horizon.
