To let your eyes go over text without gaining any understanding of the content. I am a middle school teacher and my students often tell me they "read" their homework, but have no idea what it was about. I tell them, "You didn't read, because reading takes energy and effort to gain understanding. You did something else." Finally we came up with a word for just looking over words and not knowing what it was about.
