Hat or headwear, specifically a Deerstalker. Accidentally invented due to mishearing a line from a Downliners Sect song, "Leader Of The Sect."

The actual line is: "I took off my hat 'cos it was a dear-stalker."
Apparently a "dear-stalker" is a hat worn whilst wooing maidens. (Or some such.)
In the last verse of the song, a girl fan is vying for the affections of Don Craine -- the Leader of the Sect. Unfortunately, during the process she gets run over by a "souped-up bass geetar," and our hero removes his "dear-stalker" as a mark of respect for the deceased acolyte. R.I.P.
